    Common sizes and what they are for

    Different destinations want different dimensions. Social avatars and profile photos typically land at 256–512px square. Instagram posts are 1080×1080, YouTube thumbnails 1280×720, and Open Graph images for link previews 1200×630. Blog content images rarely need more than 1920px wide, because almost no screen displays more than that.

    Resizing to the size you actually need is the most effective image optimization that exists. A photo straight off a phone is 4000+ pixels wide; if the page displays it at 800px, the browser downloads five times more pixels than it shows. Cutting the file to the display size before uploading beats any compression you might apply afterwards.

    A practical rule: resize to 2× the display width for sharp rendering on high-DPI (Retina) screens, no more. An image shown at 400px wide needs 800px of data — not 4000.

    Aspect ratio: when to keep it and when to break it

    Keep aspect ratio on (the default) whenever the image should look the same, just smaller or larger — photos, illustrations, screenshots. The height adjusts automatically to the width you type, so nothing gets stretched or squeezed.

    Turn it off for cases where a specific frame must be filled: exact square thumbnails, fixed banner slots, or when a platform demands precise dimensions like 1920×1080. Note that breaking the ratio distorts the image — if the destination requires both an exact frame and undistorted content, crop first, then resize.

    The tool keeps your input format and applies high-quality interpolation. Downscales look sharp; aggressive upscales (beyond ~2×) will look soft, because no resizer can invent detail that the original image does not contain.

    Resize, compress — or both?

    Resizing changes the number of pixels; compression changes how efficiently those pixels are stored. They solve different problems and work best together: resize to the display dimensions first, then compress the result to a sensible file size. That order matters — compressing a 4000px photo to 100KB wastes most of the budget on pixels nobody sees.

    This site has both steps: use this tool for dimensions, then the compress tools (20KB through 1MB targets) to hit a file-size limit. For conversions between formats — say a 4000px PNG that should become a 1200px JPG — resize here and convert in one more step.

    One last habit worth forming: resize a copy, never the original. Keep your full-resolution masters archived, and generate web-sized versions on demand. Storage is cheap; re-shooting a photo or recreating a graphic at higher resolution is not.
